On Sunday, January 28, while most of us shivered under the valley cloud, the Alcan Nancy Greene E2 team from Summit Lake met with other E2 racers at sunny Whitewater. The conditions were hard packed and the two courses were a bit icy as there had been no new snow. According to coaches Frances Swan and Doug McQuair, the Whitewater Racers set a good rhythmic slalom course, although some of the gates were tight. Quite a few racers missed the bottom gate, so it was pulled for the second run.
At a coaches' meeting, it was decided that skiers who missed gates would still be disqualified, despite the high number. Unfortunately, this DQed some of our nine team members. Connor McQuair was cut off by a racer who missed a gate and crossed to his finish line. Liva Niquidet liked the red course best, but Tyler Hascarl's blue run "went way better." Claire Jackson placed an outstanding 4th and Katelyn Horning placed 9th against the girls in the zone, while Tyler Hascarl placed 8th against the other boys. Angus Jackson summed up the experience by stating that "it was good."
The Trinity McQuair Memorial Fundraising Gala Event will be held Friday, Feb. 2nd, from 6 - 9 PM at Summit Lake Ski Area. A full lasagne dinner will be served for $8. There will be night skiing, music, a silent auction with amazing donations, and a 50/50 draw. Whether you ski, board, or just eat, come out and enjoy this event.
The Summit Lake Racers will host an E1/ E2 zone race on Sunday, Feb. 10th. This will bring skiers and riders from Whitewater, Salmo, Red, and Phoenix to our area. Our facilities will be stretched to capacity, as will our volunteer staff. If you can help, call Doug McQuair at 265-4327.
