SUMMIT LAKE RACERS RIP WHITEWATER

The course was tight. The snow was firm. The sun flashed off the peaks surrounding the bowls as the Summit Lake Racers challenged rival teams from Red, Salmo, and host, Whitewater.

Sunday, January 18th was the first race ever for many of our young skiers, often stimulated by their first chairlift ride. Rhys McLeod got pumped up waiting in the starting gate. Rebecca Nolan commented that it was "difficult going so fast" with so many turns, while Dawson Bone was excited, preferring his first run. Colby Mackintosh marvelled at the "cool red snow" marking the finish line. Jordan Reimer's two successful runs preceded a short afternoon of bumps and trails. Jared Groenhuysen, voicing the feelings of racers, parents, and coaches, "would like to ski here forever!"

The Rio Tinto Alcan Nancy Greene Ski League's first zone race of the year was a success. The course and logistics were well-managed by the Whitewater team. All of our E level Summit Lake Racers competed. There was "exceptional parental support," and thanks to outstanding volunteer coaches Frances Swan, Barb Lewis, Nicole Nicholson, Roger Waterfield, and Dan Nolan, our racers were prepared. The 2009 season is off to a great start.
